Social media impact (discussion 1)-Camille Koh

Social media is definitely increasing and expanding in the society nowadays. It has certainly become a part of our daily lives as most of us religiously depend on it to pass the day. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Blogger no doubt have change the way we communicate compare to the past where it still involves mailing letters. I am not saying that we do not use this method anymore, but it is getting lesser and lesser. But on the other hand, some of the positive impact that this social networking sites have is that we are able to meet new people, improve our relationship with friends and loved ones, as well as being able to find old friends and reconnect with them. That way, we can always stay in touch with each other in a more convenient way no matter where we are in the world.

Social media can also inform you about the latest happenings that are going on right now in the world, whether locally or internationally. We now do not need to just depend on the news or newspapers to know about the latest global events. For example, I can just go to Facebook and check out people's updates in my news feed to know what is trending right now like the latest happening which is the Bersih rally which has been going on for the past few days. For someone who barely watches the news, I wouldn't have even know that this rally is happening if it were not for the people on Facebook to share it in the web.

Other than that, social media can also greatly improve the economy. A lot of people are establishing their business through social media and are actually doing really well. Television programs, talk show, advertising as well as online shopping are some of the few commonly known business to have expanded quite well in the past few years. How does this impact the economy? Well, a good advertisement or commercial can really influence the people and convince them to invest on whatever the product you are trying to sell. For example, the Macbook Air commercial, although simple, it really emphasized the best feature of the product, which in this case is the thinness and lightness of the Macbook Air. People who are not familiar with the product would probably be interested just by seeing it on the television.

Social media greatly influence the way we live our lives. Whether it is a positive or negative one, I think it depends on how you use it and impact it into your lives.

  2. Ya this is true! Seriously, I know all the latest things about Bersih 2.0 from social media such as Facebook, some more social media has mediate this thing more clearly and make me understand well compared with newspaper. In other point about people establish their business through social media are actually doing well, i totally agreed with you. There is a real-life example about a friend of mine, she is not a people that highly educated, she began her minor business with less income through social media few years ago, because of the popularity of social media, her online business growing faster and larger, and now she own both online business and an existing shop by herself with quite a huge income. This is the power of social media.

  3. I agree with the point that state by Camille, it was long long time ago that i did not use mailing letters and using the social networking sites all the time. From there, i could get the news easier and fastest and without spending any of my money. I get to know the Bersih 2.0 fast from Facebook and could tell others which don't know the latest news. Not only that, I always get influence from the good advertisement from television and internet. Those we can see and hear is always in a good condition than just a piece of poster that we can see. That is why i prefer buy things from online sales.
